Colon irrigation (also known as colon hydrotherapy or colonics) exercises colon muscles that have been weakened by the build-up of toxic debris. The gentle filling and emptying of the colon during the treatment improves the peristaltic activity (muscular contraction) that moves material.
This in turn helps speed up the transit time of faecal material once the muscles have been toned, strengthened and rejuvenated.
The gentle action of the water also helps eliminate pockets of waste, returning the colon to its natural state.
The colon or large intestine is the end portion of the human digestive tract.
It eliminates waste, conserves water and absorbs electrolytes and minerals.
Waste material (impacted faeces, dead cellular tissue, accumulated mucous, parasites, chemical residue, etc) that has remained there for some time can pose health problems.
These poisons can enter the blood stream, making us feel weak, tired or ill.
Impacted materials can also impair the colon’s ability to assimilate minerals and cause an abundance of bad bacteria and yeast.
A build-up of material on the large intestine wall can also inhibit muscular action, causing sluggish bowel movements, slow transit time and Constipation. Colon irrigation, Colon Hydrotherapy, Colonics – can greatly alleviate this congestion and is a safe, effective method for ridding the system of waste.
How does it work?
Warm, filtered water is flushed gently through the colon, softening and removing ‘junk’ that has accumulated over many years. “The old timers of the colonic movement (no pun intended) maintain that “Death Begins in the Colon”. This may seem rather melodramatic but it isn’t far off. If your colon is not eliminating waste appropriately there is no way you are going to feel your optimum. The process of ageing and disease involves the body becoming more toxic and more acidic with time. In my opinion anything we can do to decrease our toxicity and acidity will improve our health. We teach all of our patients about the benefits of detoxing and alkalising. It’s intelligent health.”
How will it benefit me?
Sometimes the junk comes from what you put in your body – alcohol, caffeine, fatty foods, sugar, prescription medication, recreational drugs. And other times it is a result of natural processes that you have little control over regardless of how healthy your lifestyle may be: impacted faecal matter, undigested food, bad bacteria and parasites.
All of these factors can lead to the release, within your body, of toxins and free-radicals that can lead to disease, fatigue, brain fog, headaches, depression, insomnia, indigestion, heartburn, bad breath, mood swings, sugar cravings, skin conditions, bloating, constipation, candida and the list goes on…
After your colonic
One can usually anticipate feeling more peaceful, lighter, cleaner and more energized after a colonic. On some occasions, if there has been a long standing condition of constipation or several health problems, a “cleansing, fatigue, nausea, gas and bloating and just a general feeling of illness.
If this is so, a short rest will help restore ones equilibrium. It may take a few visits for these reactions to subside, if you are not well the day after first colonic – it is in your best interest to have another colonic asap. As your colon has many toxins that need to be removed and 1 colonic just does not do this.
Also, it should be known that since the colon has been, in most cases, cleared of most day-to-day solid matter during a colonic, it may take one or two days before it fills up again and normal bowel movements are resumed.
Again, this is a natural and necessary process that allows the therapist eventually to get down to the deeper layers and pockets in the colon.
Since some water is absorbed through the colon wall during a colonic, one may notice an increased need to urinate for a few hours afterwards.
This beneficial effect of flushing the kidneys may also be enhanced by drinking a few glasses of water with the juice of half a lemon added.
A colonic has a profound cleansing effect on the body, and many people feel so good afterwards that they want to double their jogging or work-out time. Caution is advised here, for it can be overdone.
Although light to moderate exercise is good if you are used to it, any strenuous activity should be avoided that day.
A light diet of fruits, vegetables, salads, soup, and chicken or fish should be followed for two days, taking care to avoid anything that causes gas. Rich or heavy food, flour products, spices, and alcohol should also be omitted.
Although irrigating the colon does not remove all of the intestinal bacteria, it is still often helpful to take some form of acidophilus to maintain bacterial balance. In addition, live and active culture yoghurt because it is an active cleanser that also adds vital forces to the colon.
Please note 1 in 50 people experience a little blood the next day after a colonic just when wiping. This is normal as this may be internal hemorrhoids.
